The Cheese Odyssey of Andrea Machuca

For Andrea Machuca, cheese isn't just food—it's a calling. From her early days of falling in love with cheese to becoming a celebrated cheesemonger and buyer at Five Crowns & Side Door, Andrea's journey is one of passion, discovery, and aspiration.

Early Encounters and the "Aha" Moment

Andrea's fascination with cheese began over 13 years ago. She dabbled in various cheese-related roles, from retail to managing cheese stations and creating cheese-centric dishes for events. It wasn't long before she realized a traditional "9-to-5" wasn't for her. Cheese became her world when she experienced that "aha" moment, realizing she had found her place.

The Cheesemonger Invitational

One of Andrea’s standout memories is participating in the Cheesemonger Invitational in New York. This event brought together a diverse group of cheesemongers from across the country, creating an immediate sense of family and camaraderie. Competing and taking first place in the "Perfect Plate" category was a validating achievement that showcased her dedication and skill.

Favorite Cheese: Cabricharme

When asked which cheese best represents her, Andrea chose Cabricharme, a washed rind raw goat's milk cheese from Ardennes, Belgium. Describing it as carrying notes of funk and spice, she relates to its complexity and evolving flavors, much like her own journey in the cheese industry.

Aspirations: A Farm and Community Pantry

Looking ahead, Andrea dreams of owning a farm where she can sustainably raise goats and create a community pantry. Her vision includes hosting brunches and events that highlight seasonal, artisanal, and sustainable foods. While she is currently focused on growing her small business and seizing new opportunities, the long-term goal is to dive deeper into the complexities of cheesemaking.

Where to Find Andrea

You can currently find Andrea at Five Crowns & Side Door in Corona Del Mar (CDM), where she serves as the resident cheesemonger and buyer. Five Crowns, known for its prime rib, offers more than just steakhouse fare. The Side Door complements it with a British pub-style menu. Both establishments benefit from Andrea's expertise in sourcing high-quality artisanal cheeses, charcuterie, and tinned fish, providing a decadent dining experience.
